3D Coat 4 - update 4.0.12D [BETA]

Updated to 4.0.12D. Changes:
  • fixed remove stretching vertex random shift
  • proxy mode model quality improved (better uniformness, keeping details, sriangles quality, fixed different little problems)
  • retopo opacity slider fixed
  • super smooth influence shape fixed
  • faces disappearing in retopo room during welding fixed
  • falloff problem in stamp mode fixed
Andrew is not able to reproduce several reported issues, so please check them if you have some and post more infos in the forums. What he can't reproduce in detail:
  • supersmooth collapses all into single point
  • getting from proxy destroys mesh integrity
  • smooth all in symmetry mode in retopo mode swizzles vertices

3D Coat 4 - update 4.0.12B [BETA]

Quick-Fix changes for version 4.0.12B:
  • A lot of refinement in all LC tools. In our tests quality got a boost.
  • Remove stretching got touch as well. Move + remove stretching got major quality improvement, regular rs got more uniform triangulation and a bit deeper subdivision that leads to better quality.
  • New navigation preset that is close to FPS games - arrows + MMB to look around.

3D Coat 4 - update 4.0.11 [BETA]

Changes

  • Airbrush - like tools will work even if you paint one dot with them. First touch dot will always appear. It improves painting precission generally.
  • Scripting got major update. See documentation.
    Generally it allows you to do non-destructive modeling with primitives. This is good to create parametric hardsurface stuff.
    Scripts may be inserted in any top menu section now.
    Paint layers management via script introduced.
    Extended control over voxel scene allowed.
  • To center mass/to bound center will work correctly for empty objects - it will take the point from the sum of its children.
  • Pivot/transform should work correctly with empty parent layers now.
  • Several mantis problems solved

3D Coat 4 - update 4.0.10a [BETA]

Changes:
  • Gizmo for 2D - grid, Materials and masks
  • Better algorithm for FFD pose deformations - should work cleaner
  • More visible symmetry point
  • Wireframe in Edit all layers via PSD
  • Big amount of bugs from Mantis fixed - including critical ones, see in Mantis.
  • Splines improved - loading splines dialog got major improvement, now it is possible to place splines in space and import them as 3D - shapes
  • Export big mesh from MV/PTEX as STL allowed for 3D printing
  • Application font updated to include all Unicode characters, style changes a little, symbols placement improved - symbols like VA Vo AY stay closer to each other
  • On Rauls side: Merged code with Raul. Even if I was trying to do all super accurately and have not found any issues, this area requires additional checks in real sculpting
  • Copy clay (meshmixer-like) - copy pieces from surface and paste on other place - still requires clanup from Raul. Should not be used in real job, it is still in very beta stage
  • Close holes works much more accurate and closes holes with very smooth patch
  • Bridge improvements - interpolated shape, auto-details
  • boundary extrusion, boundary smoothing

Das ist der erste Teil einer neuen Tutorial-Serie in der ich step-by-step erkläre, wie ich eine Fantasy-Waffe erstellte.
Ich zeige hier alle Bereiche der Arbeiten an dem Modell. Angefangen vom Zeichnen und Entwurf des Modells, das Bauen und Sculpten bis hin zum Bemalen in 3D Coat.

Das Tutorial ist zunächst in deutscher Sprache geplant.

For the english audience:
This is the first part of my new tutorial series. I show how to model a phantasy weapon. I explain all steps in the creation process. Beginning at the concept artwork, over the modeling and up to texture paintings in 3D Coat. If you are interested to see this video in english language, drop me an info on youtube or in my google+ channel, please. It is a lot of work to translate it, but I will try to do it as soon as possible and if enough people are interested.

BB FlashBack is my screen recording tool


People ask me sometimes what kind of screen recording software I am using. My favorite tool is #BB #FlashBack . BB FlashBack is not very popular, but extremely good. The most people use Camtasia.
Give  BB FlashBack a try if you are interested in recording professional desktop videos. There is a free version available too.

I am using the pro version. It comes with an optimised and intuitive video editor. For some of you interesting: BB FlashBack records your keyboard actions and translates them into individual icons in the final video. A great help!

3D Coat 4 - update 4.0.09 [BETA]

Changes:
  • Quadrangulation tweaked to get better capturing of narrow details and better quality in average
  • Several critical bugs from Mantis fixed - especially vertex painting with symmetry.

  • Scripts can be called from command line
  • PSD files may be exported from File->Export dialog as one of the textures types. Also if obj / lwo / fbx files refer PSD file, it will be imported correctly as well. It is especially important for AppLinks.

Mac&Linux builds will be done soon as well.

Changes:
  • Auto-retopology improved, should work better and give more stable result. But it still requires work.
    Please send any problematic files (bad quality or hang) directly to this email with subject "Autoretopo problem" - for ease of seeking. This will help to reach stable point much faster.
Please be careful with:
  1. Enabling hardsurface on soft meshes will give wrong result
  2. Symmetry is very important!
  3. Too many guidelines may drop down quality. Mark only really important guides. But in most cases guides are not required at all.

Changes:

1) Essentially updated quadrangulation:
  • quads only in very most cases
  • adaptive density, much better features capturing (like fingers)
  • users strokes will create exact edges if tangent post-smoothing is turned off
  • hardsurface retopology. But it is a bit experimental.
  • good symmetry support. Symmetry improves quality drastically.
  • no more spirals. Edgeloops are created in almost all cases.

3D Coat 4 - update 4.0.06 [BETA]

Changes:
  • New: sticky keys implemented.
    Description:
    You can define a hotkey to almost any action that you may perform via UI. To define a hotkey move your cursor over the required action and press the END key. Then press the required key combination. Keys can be specific for the current room or even a tool. One key may be assigned to multiple actions or tools simultaneously (called Stacked Keys). Stacked Keys allows you to cycle through multiple tools with a single hotkey. If you define a single action, tool or preset to a key, then you can use Sticky Keys. Pressing the key will activate tool and if you continue to hold it then release, it will activate the previous tool. In such a way you may temporarily activate some tool like freeze for example. With Sticky Keys, if you activate tool via hotkey and press the assigned key again, it will re-activate the previously used tool. Sticky keys does not work with Stacked Keys. Softimage users knows the sticky mode, it works similar.
  • New: A custom hint can be assigned to any preset now.
  • Update: Artman's presets updated.
  • Improvement: Pinch tool improved a lot - now it applies displacement + more accurate + separate pressure curves for depth and pinch.
  • Improvement: Brushes were improved even more. Rotation stabilisation improved. Now the Rapid brush is very accurate and nice.
  • Improvement: Sync with Photoshop and other psd compatible editors keeps correct visibility of layers exchange.
  • Improvement: Baking works cleaner now, especially on thin surfaces and hardsurface geometry, additionally at uv seam positions.
  • Change: Now a dot will be used in brush center instead of a cross.

3D Coat 4 - update 4.0.05H [BETA]

Changes:
  • Surface mode brushes tuned a lot to produce good and predictable result. Especially the following:
    Draw, Clay, Flatten, Chiesel, Rapid, Rqapid2, Claws, Claws2, Mud, Mud2, LC, Lute
    Andrew especially recommend Rapid, Rapid2 and Flatten with Buildup.
  • Problem (relatively rare) with first big spot when brushing with pen finally resolved.
  • Better stability of LC & Remove stretching brushing, no more black dots.
  • Loop subdivision tool implemented in surface tools. It is just regular mesh subdivision, very helpful for accurate detailing.
  • Smoother tool to smooth selected area at infinity degree. This is valence independent smoothing of some area regardless on it's topology. Instead of iterative smoothing it solves directly the Poisson equation. There is option to preserve details and get area that preserves general shape but vanishes details.
  • Delete all layers changed to "Delete unused layers"
  • Top panel optimized for lower resolution, it may work correctly on 1280x... screens
  • Artman's preset included by default. It overwrites existing artman tools once after installing

3D Coat 4 - update to RC01

Changes:
  • Important! LC details parameters changed to be in consistency with V3.7.18.
    Now it produces 2x more details than before, othervice even maximal value of 3.0 results in not enough details. Pay attention to this change: if you set a hight value for LC details, decrease it twice. Additinally default spacing was adjusted a bit to produce more comfortable results. This change needs your attention please. If Andrew has broken comfortable sculpting feeling, drop a info in the forums. Andrew says: If he will change this point later more it will be very hard to explain it to a wider auditory.
  • Brush option "rotate along stroke" improved a lot
  • FipX/Y/Z fixed
  • Set of default brushes/strips/masks updated
  • Increase/Decrease 2X problems fixed

3D Coat v.4 update: RC00

Hi guys.

I took two weeks off and enjoyed my holidays on a german island in the North Sea, called "Borkum". I will publish some nice photos I made sometime within the upcoming days.

But now back to 3D Coat:

V4 got release candidate. Pilgway plans to release next week.
Please test and check. Drop a note in the forums, if Andrew has forgot something important.

Changes RC00:

  • pencil tool for single pixel painting
  • new icons in navigation panel for ease of access
  • new shaders preview
  • a lot of refinement and bugfixes from mantis

Changes in BETA16:

  • Bake occlusion tool may bake direct light
  • flattern tool in Paint tool will work correctly for PPP
  • a lot of work done to fix bugs reported by mantis, crash reports, issues sent to support
  • ptex painting speed improved essentially, random quads issue fixed

3D Coat v.4 update: BETA 15

Changes:
  • Improvement: boolean operations should work faster. It is especially related to merging surface volumes.
    Color information will be correctly transformed. It is recommended to merge small volume->big volume, it will work faster.
  • Bugfix: fixed problem of using spline stroke with small pen radius (there was radius when nothing was drawn)
  • Bugfix: fixed problem of seams over UV pieces that are outside of [0..1] UV square
  • Bugfix: fixed different problems related to seamlessness of painting
  • Additional fixes: a lot of mantis related problems fixed.

3D Coat v.4 update: BETA 14A

BETA14A intended mainly to polish all and fix mantis problems. Linux & Mac version expected in 1-2 days.

Changes:
  • New feature: Possibility to specify distance between UV islands when packing (see command in left panel with settings)
  • Improvement: When loading model with extenal textures each texture will be placed on separate layer, better support of bump in external textures.
  • Improvement: LWO file format import improved, now if multiple surfaces refer the same texture they will be gathered to single UV set.
  • Bigfixes: A lot of major mantis-reorted problems fixed including dots and falloff problem.

3D Coat v.4 update: BETA 14

Changes
  • Important improvement: Main problems of ppp are solved. Now possible to paint even deep displacement without artifacts. Before you were able to paint only small bump-like displacement, now the normal map is calculated correctly for deep displacement, too.

    Info: Baking voxels -> ppp displacement is not tuned well, but will be improved in next build.

  • Improvement: "LC reduce" reduces more powerfully now, cap turned off, LC tools are working much better on mixed big/small triangles scene.
  • Polish: Primitives gizmos polished a to act more convenient and look better.
  • Improvement: Clone, Cut&Clone extended to surface mode too.
  • Improvement: Auto pick option in most tools will allow to switch to other volumes automatically while drawing without need to switch there manually.
  • Improvement: Split tool extended to surface mode too. It allows you to split through all scene content, split instances. <-- good for making broken objects.
  • Improvement: Rendering semi-transparent objects improved, now will be rendered correctly (sorted from back to front) almost always.
  • Bugfixes: A lot of mantis reported problems fixed

3D Coat v.4 update: BETA 13

Changes:
  • Huge improvement: Baking settings improved a lot to get full control over the baking Example: bit.ly/154tlJd
    The new baking allows you now to set different scan depth for individual areas of the mesh.
  • Improvement: Baking will take into account externally loaded normalmap
  • NEW: Tiled voxel space introduced to produce tiled textures in voxel room. It is easy to export the result via File->Export->Export depth along Y. See the wizard in start menu->Surface mode
  • NEW: File->Export->Export depth along Y may be useful to produce textures, masks and alphas too.
  • Bugfix: Huge amount of typos fixed.
  • Improvement: Improved compatibility with LW11, now textures will load automatically.
  • Improvement: Auto seams will act on current group only.
  • Bugfix: A lot of mantis reported problems fixed and a lot of work done for stabilisation and cleaning.

This nice piece was modeled and sculpted by Stu Sutcliffe in 3D Coat and Carrara. Carrara was used for the render, the hair, the eyes, a few bandages and the draping of the dress.

3D Coat v.4 update: BETA 12

Main intension of the build is bugfixing, big amount of mantis reported problems fixed. A lot of critical problems solved. Often mentioned lags problem fixed too.

Changes:
  • Camera can be stored in a file and restored again to get the saved position
  • Important change in masks painting: A volume preserving mode is now the default seeting. In this mode instead of just modulating effects by mask surface may be displaced in both sides - back and forward so that the average volume will be approximately preserved. It is very important if you use mask for detailing. This mode allows to avoid constant surface growing when painting.
  • Models palette is now available in Retopo room to be merged directly in retopo room. Retopo layers may be dragged to that palette.
  • E-mode circle/lasso/rectangle/spline etc. works closer to PS style now - SPACE + LMB will move the whole shape.
  • Render room got improvements - prossibility to render blended states between several saved scenes. In this way short animated illustrations may be easily rendered. It was done mainly for Andrews son's personal project, he think it will be helpful for the community too. Andrew expects to be criticized for this little animation support, but it was his personal need, not just a new feature, so he says, he will be really sad in case of critics.
  • German language update (Not final but Christoph Werner is working on it.)
  • A lot of small but important changes...

App Tip: Subd Recovery

Here an application tip for you, I've found today:
You have lost your base subdivision levels of your highpoly model? Get them back with "Subd Recovery". You import your highpoly model and be able to recover your subdiv levels automatically. Great solution for highpoly assets! I imagine it could be useful for optimising scanned data too, when quadrangulated.

A long time has past when I posted a featured artist article on my blog. One of the main problems is to find extraordinary artists for my interviews. It is not important for me to use 3D Coat in the daily work. The main issue is that the most good artists have not much time to answer my requests. But anyway.

Finally I have found a very gentle and talented artist from Iran, Fuad Ghaderi. So enjoy the article.

The artist
1. Fuad, how old are you?
Hello Mr. Werner. I am so thankful that for choosing me for the interview. I am 22.

2. Where are you currently living?
Currently I'm living in Iran, near Alborz Mountains. The climate is nice and gives me energy.

3. Good art needs time, but what are you doing when you switch your PC off? Do you have other hobbies?
I enjoy playing video games. I allocate most of my time to it. I also believe listening to classical music and watching movies are among the most amusing entertainments of the mankind.

About the work
1. How did you get the idea to be an digital artist, why mainly digital?
That is a hard question. Maybe because of its infinite features and speeding up the workflow. However, it is not appropriate to classify digital art as another kind of art, since you need a complete understanding of art to create an artwork. Digital is just a tool for an artist.

2. Do you have a special aducation in arts or is all this self-aducated?
Unfortunately no. I followed this profession intuitively. I have no academic education. It was my choice because education costs in Iran are more than I can afford.

3. Are you employed or do you work freelance?
Currently I work as freelance, but I accept full-time projects from time to time. However, neither of them is considered professional in Iran. I have been employed.





4. Which recent projects were the most important for you?
Currently I am working on an independent video game with my friends. Maybe it is the most important project for me, which currently is a great concern for me.



5. Which project was a particular challenge for you?
Unfortunately there are not many important events happening in artistic production in Iran and I don’t have the opportunity to take part in significant projects. However, all of the projects assigned to me are challenging for me. In fact I like challenges. I should say characters are the hardest of them.

6. Your art is very special, where do you get your ideas from?
Idea is something that you get from reading a lot. I spent a lot of time reading historic mythology books and books about various civilizations and also reviewing the works of famous artists. That is really enjoyable and gives me a lot of ideas.

7. Are you working mainly with references or is all your work from imagination?
Basically I enjoy creating abstract atmospheres, independent of the real world. My speciality is designing organic and robotic elements, and linking them to form a general concept, and ultimately creating an image from it.

8. What are your plans as an artist for the future?
I do not believe in future. I am trying hard to enjoy art and being with artists and to learn and to update my works and reach ideal quality.

9. Which software are you using for your work, and which hardware?
I mostly use 3D-Coat, 3DSMAX and sometimes Blender and KeyShot for 3D and use Photoshop and ArtRage for 2D.

I don'tt have a powerful computer, here are the current specs:
4gb ram - gtx 560 ti 1024 mb graphic card  - AMD Athlon Dual CoreProcessor 5000+ 2.60 GHZ- wacom intuos 4 large tablet


10. Is there a tool or method do you like the most and never want to miss?
Voxel is one of the most revolutionary tools in digital sculpting. If it was not there, we could not be able to do many things we can do today. I am so thankful to Andrew Shpaghin for implementing this revolutionary and useful tool into 3D Coat.

3D Coat v.4 update: BETA 11

Changes for BETA 11:
  • NEW: C++ like script language (called Angelscript) will be available soon within 3D-Coat's shell.
    It allows you to perform batch actions, create macro commands and interactive tutorials. It has very basic functionality now and will be extended on requests. C++ like scripting was choosen because of speed and the possibility to include good scripts directly into 3D-Coat's engine.
  • Fixes and improvements: Transform gizmo related:
    1) Leave rotated axis turned ON by default.
    2) Gizmo direction & position stored for each volume now. Both are correctly transformed when parents will be transformed.
    3) "To main axis" button included - it is the same as in retopo room. Retopo room's button were renamed to "To main axis" because it has no relation to any local space.
    4) Mannequin model rearranged - parenting corrected here, pivots and axis direction too. It was very easy with the new command. Now posing mannequin is pure joy.
    5) To center mass/bound center are changing only position now, not direction.
    6) [X] button near coordinates placed to clear them quickly.
    7) In Primitives directions are hidden by default, but you may show them if needed (Axis coordinates were cluttering the panel a lot)
  • Fix: Masks preview for cubemapping (when navigating)
  • Fix: Lag problem when switching rooms and tools fixed
  • Fix: Several mantis reports fixed
Mac, Linux builds coming soon, but some delay possible due to scripts implementing.

Changes:

  • NEW: Magic wand tool in paint room
  • Improvement: New items in VoxTree->RMB menu: Show all, Show subtree (To make nodes visible)
  • Improvement: All applicable brush jitters will act now on merge tool in "On pen" mode - http://t.co/JynOj0D2
  • Bugfix: VoxExtrude works now correctly with different combinations of symmetry/extrude directions/flatten
  • Bugfix: A lot of mantis reported problems fixed, a lot of work done there

3D Coat v.4 update: BETA 9C

  • Improvement: Important change! "Ignore backfaces" works basing on Z-Buffer, not on normals direction. It makes possible to work correctly over multilayered structures correctly (example - thin pants).
  • Improvement: Curve stroke improved to work well with thin walls even if b-splines are used.
  • Bugfix: A lot of mantis bugfixes

1.12.2013 BETA9B

  • Improvement: mproved Absolute/Extrude/LC Extrude bruhes (how they work with pen pressure), fixed dots in General brush
  • Bugfix: Fixed major problem of broken SHIFT smoothing in LC tools

  • New: CTRL in VoxExtrude will invert extrusion
  • New: Smooth all may work over frozen area and will work much faster. It gives good and predictable way to smooth selected areas.

Happy new year!

Hello friends,

ok the new year has actually already begun, but I guess it is still fresh and so I wish you all the best for the upcoming twelve months. May all your wishes and plans become true. Stay healthy to reach all your dreams.

As always I will try to keep you up to date with infos about 3D Coat and, from time to time, other small interesting graphics tools in the market.
Additionally I plan to invest a bit  more time to produce tutorials beside my main work. In the last year it was not that easy to give you much support with tutorials. I hope it will change this year and don't stay a naive wish - so please keep your fingers crossed.
